2 CVSC Entry-Level Referee Clinics

Learn and Earn Your USSF Referee Badge - Class starts 7/25/14 or 8/8/14

Wonder about that call?  Wonder about that Law (no rules in soccer, all laws!)?  What do the hand and flags signals mean, and what the heck is "offside?"  Tired of jogging for your health with no particular destination, or just want to contribute to local soccer "calling ’em straight?  Now’s the time

Castro Valley Soccer Club is offering 2 different classes this summer:

A special compressed Grade 8 referee class, beginning on Friday July 25th.  The grade 8 license is the basic "full" license for refereeing.  Take the class and pass the test, and become a USSF (United States Soccer Federation) certified soccer referee.  Both youth and adults --especially adults-- are invited to apply to the class and learn the art and science of refereeing, and earn money doing it.  Students must be at least 12 years old by August 1, 2014.  Maximum age is "can you run?"  The classes are 18 hours total and candidates are required to attend ALL sessions.  The last class is test night, and if successful, you’ll head home with a referee badge in hand.  And no better way than to spend a Saturday with the soccer youth of Castro Valley!

Special weekend compression classes for grade 8 referee:

  • 7/25   Fri   6:30pm-9:30pm - Classroom Session 1
  • 7/26   Sat   8:00am-11am - Classroom Session 2
  • 7/26   Sat   12:00pm-3:00pm - Classroom Session 3
  • 7/27   Sun   9:00am-12:00pm - Field Session at Canyon Middle School
  • 7/27   Sun   1:00pm-4:00pm - Classroom Session 4
  • 7/29   Tue   6:30pm-9:30pm - Certification Exam (test night, leave as soon as test finished and getting badge)

A Grade 9 referee class, beginning on Friday August 8th. The grade 9 license allows you to referee Recreational games only, not Competitive.

        8/8  Fri  6:30 pm - 9:30 pm - Classroom Session 1

        8/9  Sat 8:30 am - 3:00 pm - Classroom Session 2 and 2-1/2 hour Field Session

Classroom and Certification sessions are at CVSC office located at 3585 Castro Valley Boulevard, Castro Valley, CA 94546 [map]

To reserve one of only thirty places in each clinic, send a non-refundable check for $10 (CVSC and family members) or $15 (non-CVSC members) payable to Castro Valley Soccer Club.  Please specify if you are signing up for the Grade 8 or Grade 9 class.  Send your check to the CVSC office at:

Castro Valley Soccer Club
ATTN: Referee Class
3585 Castro Valley Blvd.
Castro Valley, CA  94552

NOTE: Along with your check for $10, please also include the following information for each candidate:

  • Name
  • Birthdate
  • Phone number
  • Email address

The clinic will be filled by the order of received checks in the mail, using the postmark date, with preference given to CVSC members and member families.  Last year (and years before) the class filled early, so don’t put it off.  If your check is received after we have filled the class, we will put you on a waiting list.  Checks will not be cashed unless applicants are successfully enrolled.  There is a $45 fee to the CNRA/USSF upon passing the certification exam for the annual licensing.

We listed some FAQs below:
  • Do I have to attend all classes?  Yep, all classes.  That's the rule.
  • But my kid is in band/plays for the Yankees/is in the Peace Corp in Namibia?  Yep, but still all the classes
  • Are there other classes?  Yes-- around the East Bay other leagues/clubs put on classes.  All have the same requirements.  If you miss one of our classes, you can ask the administrator of one of those other club classes if you can sit in for the missed class, but we will then need signed paperwork that that class was attended before you can take the test.  Check out http://www.area4referees.org/classes-and-clinics.html for more info.
  • Can adults ref?  Yes they can.  Best thing in the world is for a parent to learn the game so when they critique the ref calls, they'll know what they are critiquing.  I'm 63, kid's long out of the house, and I still love it.  Beats jogging by yourself by a mile.

If you have any questions, please email the CVSC Referee Program Director, Ken Couche, at referees@castrovalleysoccer.com
