WOODLAND, CA - The CVSC U13 Girls United - Green won the 2nd NorCal State Cup title in club history when they defeated Elk Grove Everton in the Norcal Premier 1 Cup finals on Sunday, February 13 on kicks from the mark (5-3) after the match went full-time and extra-time without a winner. Securing their fifth tournament championship of the season, United was one of only two teams to go undefeated throughout all five rounds of the tournament

Sunday’s contest pitted the tough, gritty style of Elk Grove against CVSC’s fluid attack.  Both teams started the game aggressively, trying to impose their will over the other, but it was United who found the net first on a sharp Jamie McPherson volley from a well delivered corner by Alyssa DuPuis.  Buoyed with confidence, Castro Valley continued to push while strong team defense stymied Elk Grove, but the score remained unchanged at half-time with CVSC leading 1-0.

The second half started similar to the first, but it was Elk Grove who garnered the next scoring opportunity when they were awarded a penalty, from which they leveled the scores.   The tie didn’t last long with CVSC taking the lead off another Alyssa DuPuis corner kick, this time volleyed with confidence by Madison McNamara.  However, United were unable to hold their lead as Elk Grove successfully pushed for and finished equalizer. The game remained tied 2-2 despite furious pressure from CVSC, and when the subsequent extra-time periods did not yield any goals, the game moved to penalty kicks to decide the winner.

Madison McNamara was the first of five United players to strike productively from the penalty spot, followed by successful attempts by SunIm Chang, Alyssa DuPuis, and Jordyn Cunningham.  When the fourth Elk Grove shooter hit the upright with her shot and missed, it was up to Jamie McPherson to win the game.  She calmly struck her shot with power and confidence, finding the back of the net despite a valiant parry from the Elk Grove goalkeeper.  With that, the field was filled with eruptions of joy and the team rushed together for a furious celebration as they were crowned champions.  The State Cup title was the result of months of preparation and practice by the girls and their coaches; early season struggles gave way to the ultimately successful completion of the team’s year with every United player making significant contributions.
