CVSC's Rebecca Kilmartin recently had the honor of playing for Tonga in the Oceania Football Confederation's Women's Nation Cup in Kokopo, Papua New Guinea.
The OFC Cup tournament determined which country would represent OFC at the 2015 Women's World Cup that will be held in Canada.
Rebecca is a long-time CVSC player. She is currently a starting defender on CVSC's United U17 NPL competitive team as well as for Moreau Catholic's Varsity Women's soccer team.
Soccer has given Rebecca an incredible opportunity to travel the globe at a relatively young age. She was aske to join the Tongan Women's National Team as part of their 2015 WWC qualifying campaign. Rebecca spent six weeks with Tongan WNT in preparation for their WWCQ matches.
The preparation included playing in the Joey's Mini World Cup Tourmanet in New South Wales, Australia where she faced teams from Australia, Germany and New Zealand. Tonga finished 2nd out of nine teams.
Her tournament performance earned her an invite to join the Joey’s Soccer Academy Tour of Germany in 2015 for five weeks.
Rebecca and the Tongan WNT followed the tournament with a week of intense training under the guidance of former Australian National Team coach Rale Rasic. The team then travelled to Papua New Guinea to face the Cook Islands, New Zealand and Papa New Guinea.
And while New Zealand rather than Tonga eventually qualifed for the 2015 WWC, Rebecca wouldn't trade her experience these past couple of months.
It was difficult being away from home, family and friends for so long but the soccer and life experience Rebecca gained was invaluable. She looks forward to travelling to and playing in Germany in 2015.
