2008 Year in Review

2008 marked the club's 27th season.  Our player registration numbers have remained consistent over the past four to five years and we are still the largest youth sports group in Castro Valley.  Detailed registration numbers for 2008 are listed in the following table:

The Club increased its commitment to provide additional soccer training to our Division 4 players by:

  • Continuing the U5 & U6 Grasshopper Program (approximately 235 players)
  • Continuing the Saturday Summer Drop-in Training Program (approximately 350 unique participants from U5 to U14)
  • Replacing our Coach Education Program with the Fall Team Training Program (almost every U7 to U19 Division 4 team received one training session and we received very positive feedback from the teams.)

The above programs are staffed by professional soccer trainers provided by 24-7 UK Soccer Academy and are included in a player's regular registration fee.  There are no additional registration charges or fees to participate.

The Club once again sponsored a post-season All-Star program for U8 to U12 Division 4 players.  All-Star players played an extra weekend of games.  All-Stars received a commemorative CVSC All-Star T-shirt.

3 of the Club's 12 U16 & U19 Division 4 teams finished either first or second in the District 4 Playing League.

In response to Division 1 and Division 3 members' requests for more year-round soccer playing opportunities, the Club entered NorCal Premier League's Spring Playing League.  Division 1 teams also began training earlier in the year as well as participating in better and more tournaments.

Also in response to members' requests, the Club mandated professional coaches for our Division 1 U9 to U12 teams for the 2008 season.  As a result of the positive feedback from players and parents as well as the success of our Division 1 teams in league and tournament play, we are expanding the professional coach program to include Division 1 U9 to U14 teams for 2009.

6 of the Club's 15 Division 1 teams finished either first or second place in the Golden State Soccer League or NorCal Premier League.  That total is second only to the Mustang Soccer Club.  This was the Club's first year with professional head coaches at our U9 to U12 Division age groups.

4 of the Club's 15 Division 3 teams finished either first or second place in the Al Caffodio League.  This was the Club's first year participating in this more competitive league and our teams enjoyed the challenge, which brought shorter commutes to away games, better fields and better officiating.

The Club hosted 6 CYSA or US Club tournaments:

  • Winter Shootout for Division 1 teams
  • Boys Kickoff for Division 3 teams
  • Girls First Look for Division 3 teams
  • Footie Fest for U9 and U10 Division 1 & 3 teams
  • Boys Autumn Classic for Division 4 teams
  • Girls Autumn Classic for Division 4 teams

Combining tournament and league games, we hosted nearly 1,000 matches in 2008.

Thanks to our improved referee program, which saw the introduction of referee mentors, increased referee training opportunities and higher game pay scale, the Club was able to provide nearly 100% coverage of either a center referee or 3-person officiating crew for all U7 to U19 games.  Considering how many games we host, this is truly a remarkable accomplishment.  We also certified approximately 50 new grade 8 referees this past year.

Our challenge this year and going forward will again be fields, both in quantity and quality.  We use a combination of Castro Valley Unified School District and Hayward Park and Recreation District fields but we may need to expand our search for fields in order to satisfy our field requirements.

In summary, 2008 was another great year for the Castro Valley but 2009 promises to be even better.  While we are currently in the planning process for next year, we hope to improve and expand upon our successes in all areas of the Club.

Thank you to our membership for their continued support of the Club's mission to provide children in and around Castro Valley with the opportunity to learn and play soccer.

Yours in soccer,

Sue Smith
